 PRINCIPALS’ REPORT

We have had another eventful week at RGLPS. The education week festivities and our Year 3 and 4 excursions just a few of the different experiences offered to our students this week. Next week will bring some more fun. I am personally excited about our Upper Primary Deaf Facility excursion to Mary Poppins.

Education Week

It was wonderful to see so many visitors in the school for our RGLPS Education Week celebrations yesterday! Students were involved in all sorts of fun activities around this year’s theme ‘Move, Make, Motivate’.

2023 Student Attitudes to School Survey

We value student voice as a means to improving student engagement, wellbeing and quality instruction and are conducting a survey to find out what your child thinks of their school.

The AtoSS is an annual student survey offered by the Department of Education to assist schools to gain an understanding of students’ perceptions and experience of school. Students will be asked about their thoughts and feelings in relation to their school, their learning, peer relationships, resilience, bullying, health and wellbeing, physical activity, and life in general.

This year, the AtoSS will be conducted at Golf Links from the 22nd of May to the 5th of June. If your Child is in Year 4, 5 or 6 we have some information in Compass with more detail about the survey.

Cyber Safety Parent Information Sessions

Last Monday and Tuesday evening, we had the privilege of hosting a cyber safety presentation aimed at equipping parents with practical suggestions on how to ensure their children’s safety in this increasingly digital age. We would like to take this opportunity to provide you with a recap of the valuable information shared during these sessions.

The evenings commenced with an introduction to the importance of cyber safety in the lives of our children. As technology becomes more integrated into the daily activities of our children, it is vital for our parents to be proactive and informed about potential risks and how to mitigate them.

During the presentation Bec and Steve from Evolve covered a wide range of topics. They addressed the significance of open communication between parents and children. Establishing a safe space where children feel comfortable discussing their online experiences is crucial in identifying potential risks early on.

One of my clear takeaways was the concept of setting family guidelines and boundaries around technology use. Bec and Steve also introduced us to the beacon cyber safety app.

This app provides many tools helpful to navigating technology minefields as a family. We encourage you to take a look at the app.

Thank you for your commitment to keeping our children safe in the digital world.

RGLPS Dance Extravaganza

I write today to inform you of an important change to the Dance Extravaganza event. Due to unforeseen booking issues beyond our control, we have had to make the decision to reschedule the Dance Extravaganza to Term 4. While we understand that this may come as disappointing news, we assure you that this adjustment will bring some exciting opportunities for our performers and the overall event.

By moving the dance to term 4 the silver lining is that we can now include live performances from our fantastic bands and provide a unique and unforgettable experience for our students and community.

We are committed to showcasing the incredible talent of our hard working students, and we are thrilled to have this opportunity to integrate our bands into the Dance Extravaganza. We appreciate your support and understanding and look forward to the rescheduled event.

APPLY NOW TO ENROL YOUR CHILD IN PREP FOR 2024

The Department of Education has released a new statewide timeline for enrolling in Foundation (Prep) for the 2024 school year.

If you have a child starting primary school in 2024, it’s time to enrol. Make sure to submit your enrolment application by Friday 28 July 2023.

If you are enrolling the sibling of a student at our school for Foundation in 2024, and both children will be attending our school at the same time, your child is prioritised for a place at our school as per the department’s Placement Policy.

It is important to follow the statewide timeline to enrol your child in Foundation. Enrolling your child in line with the timelines allows us to plan our classrooms, staffing and transition activities and ensures your child has the best start to school.

For more information, please read about when and how to enrol your child in Foundation at vic.gov.au/enrolling-foundation-prep.

Prep enrolment packs are available in the foyer at the school office.

Common Sense Media - Fabulous Parent and Educator Resource for Navigating the Digital World

Parents and carers may or may not be familiar with Common Sense Media. See:  www.commonsensemedia.org

Common Sense Media’s stated aim is to work at every level to build a more healthy, equitable, and empowering future for all kids in the digital age.

On this site, parents can check expert and parent reviews of popular movies, TV shows, books, games, and apps to determine their suitability for their child and family. The site lists what you will and won’t find in the material, so you can make an informed decision about its appropriateness.

On the Parent Tips and FAQS tab, the site lists pros and cons of various online platforms including Roblox, Fortnight and Snapchat. It also provides a host of useful information for parents around how to support your child/ren to be safe online.

The site is well worth a look if you haven’t explored it previously or if you are seeking advice to support your child when accessing devices, the internet or a specific resource.

RGLPS will be participating in ‘National Simultaneous Storytime’ next Wednesday 24th May. This year’s book is ‘The Speedy Sloth’, written by Rebecca Young and illustrated by Health McKenzie.
