 PRINCIPALS’ REPORT

The sun is shining, and all is going well at Golf Links. With a few excursions spattered around our learning this term the students are feeling excited and fun has been an optimal component of the learning thus far this term. Our Year 1 and 2 cohort had a great time at the Werribee Zoo on Monday with all reports back that our students represented Golf Links beautifully. Interschool sports starts this week with all of our Year 6 students very excited to commence.

Staffing

Congratulations to Luke Franklin who has been asked to help out the system and spend the next few weeks at Panton Hill Primary School as the Acting Principal there. At very short notice Luke has made things work and impressively handed over any must action items. Whilst we miss Luke terribly during these little stints, we know that the learning he has on the job will also benefit our kids when he returns.

Students Attitudes to School Survey

We value student voice as a means to improving student engagement, wellbeing and quality instruction and are conducting a survey to find out what your child thinks of their school.

The AtoSS is an annual student survey offered by the Department of Education to assist schools to gain an understanding of students’ perceptions and experience of school. Students will be asked about their thoughts and feelings in relation to their school, their learning, peer relationships, resilience, bullying, health and wellbeing, physical activity, and life in general.

This year, the AtoSS will be conducted from the 13th to the 31st of May.  If your Child is in Year 4, 5 or 6 there has already been an information and consent form sent through Compass. Please have a look to make sure you are fully informed about the tool.

Education Week 2024

This year, Education Week runs from Monday 13 May to Friday 17 May. The theme, Spotlight on STEM, celebrates the importance of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in our everyday lives, in the classroom and beyond.

Rosanna Golf Links Primary School will be celebrating Education Week by running an open morning on Tuesday the 14th of May. Please come in and join us for some STEM activities at 9:00am. We will also run a 2025 prospective Prep open morning from 9:30 on Thursday the 16th.

Note: All Prep classes and 1CA will open their classroom doors at 2:40pm-3:30pm.

A reminder that the Department of Education has in place a mobile phone ban that requires students who bring mobiles phones to school to have them switched off and securely put away during school hours.

The department is requiring all schools to ensure this ban is in place and enforced from the start of the 2024 school year.

The ban applies equally to all government schools right across the state.

This helps ensure that school is a learning environment free from unnecessary distractions and disruptions.

By ensuring mobile phones are kept away at recess and lunch times, students can interact with each other face-to-face, without the distractions and social pressures that mobile phones can cause.

I ask for the support of all our families, staff and students in continuing to support the implementation of this policy in our school.

Further information

Exceptions: For a small number of students with particular health needs, an exception to the policy may be granted. Please contact our leadership team if you would like to discuss this.

Emergencies: In the event of an emergency or if you need to immediately contact your child, I ask that families contact the school office who will pass on a message as required.

Project Rockit - Inspirational Talk by Lucy Thomas

On Monday 6th May, Year 5/6 students will have the opportunity to listen to Lucy Thomas, Co-founder and Co-CEO of Project Rockit.

As a keynote speaker and facilitator, Lucy has personally worked with hundreds of thousands of young people all over the world, from Wangaratta to Texas, Wollongong to Auckland, Atherton to Perth. Lucy’s work has been honoured by UNICEF, The University of Melbourne, The Foundation of Young Australians, the global Family Online Safety Institute and they are a recipient of an Order of Australia Medal for service to youth and the issue of bullying.

Her talk presents a balance of storytelling and practical take-aways – students will walk away with safe and socially credible strategies to support each other around bullying and wellbeing, create positive relationships and school environments where kindness and respect thrive, and a toolkit of youth-driven ideas for tackling (cyber)bullying.

Parents are welcome to attend.

Cystic Fibrosis - Free Dress Day

Friday 24th May

Every May, the cystic fibrosis community comes together for CF Awareness Month. The theme of this year’s CF Awareness Month is, “Resilient.”

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an inherited disease in which the body makes very thick, sticky mucus. The mucus causes problems in the lungs, pancreas, and other organs. People with cystic fibrosis get lung infections often. Over time, they have more trouble breathing.

Friday 24th May will be a free dress day. We aim to raise awareness about cystic fibrosis and ask students to bring along a gold coin to donate to the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Walk to school with Kirrily, Cathie and Denisse!

Walk Safely to School Day asks that we all consider our transport habits and try to incorporate more walking as part of a healthy, active way to get around. And although walking all the way to school isn’t realistic for many of us, it’s quite easy to figure out how you can build a walk into your family’s daily routine.

You can teach your child the healthy habit of walking more by:

  •    – Walking with them the whole way to school
  •    – If they get the bus or train, walk past your usual stop and get on at the next stop
  •    – If you have to drive, park the car a few blocks away from the school and walk the rest of the way.

Regular exercise like walking with your child not only helps them (and you!) beat chronic problems like obesity, heart disease, behavioural and mental health issues and diabetes. It also gives you a great opportunity to teach your child safe ways to behave around roads and traffic.

Remember, Active Kids are Healthy Kids! Join us to walk to school on Friday 10 MAY 2024!

You will find us at the meeting points below. Parents/carers please note that you will still be required to supervise your children and walk along with us.
