IMPORTANT DATES!

TERM 2 2020

There are no upcoming events.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

A very big welcome back to our Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 students. It was so lovely to walk into all of the classrooms this week and meet everyone. Our students have all been working hard during remote learning and it has been extremely pleasing to see them all take some additional care around the school to keep everyone safe.

Drop Off and Pick Up

A very big thank you to all of the families and students for assisting us to keep everyone safe during our first week of staggered pick up. It only really took us one day to get in running reasonably smoothly. A reminder that we will be staggering pick up time for the remainder of the term. Drop off is still 9:00am for all students. As per usual students will be able to be supervised inside the school from 8:45am with the bell to commence ringing at 9:00am.

We will continue to run with the alphabetic stagger. Students whose surname commences with an A – M will finish school at 3:15pm. Those commencing with an A – F will exit via the front gate and those commencing with a G – M will exit from the back gate. Students whose surname commences with an N – Z will finish school at 3:30pm. Those commencing with an N – S will exit from the front gate and those commencing with a T – Z will exit from the back gate.

Don’t forget to encourage older siblings to pick up younger siblings from their classroom and exit the school together. We also encourage families to arrange a meeting point if your child/ren is independent and allow them to walk and meet you away from the congested gate area. Students who are walking to school may exit or enter through any gate.

It has been extremely encouraging to see parents picking up students as quickly as possible. We continue to follow the Victorian Chief Medical Officers advice and ask that we refrain from lingering after pick up. We are all very keen for restrictions to be lifted and parents getting back onto our site but we must continue with this process for the rest of the term until advice alters.

We Want Your Feedback

A reminder that we are asking for feedback from parents to enable us to work together to continue to improve our practice. We have created a short 9 question survey and would value the input of all parents. Please click on this link https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/KK57QDG and complete your responses by midnight tonight. We thank you for your time and we look forward to hearing from you about how we can continue to improve our practices.

Last Day of Term

Friday the 26th of June is the last day of term 2. We will be finishing off the day one hour earlier. This means that our students whose surname commences with an A – M will finish the day at 2:15pm and our students whose surname commences with an N – Z will finish the day at 2:30.

Uniform Shop

Please note that we can order items from the uniform shop over the phone. If you have concerns about sizes we are more than happy to send home for trial and exchange if needed. Do remember we are attempting to reduce the number of people on our site during this time of restriction to ensure the safety of our community.

SUSTAINABILITY

TEACHING AND LEARNING

Welcome Back Year 3-6 Students!

It has been wonderful to see the faces of all our Year 3-6 students who have now returned onsite after a lengthy period of remote learning.

To support all student’s wellbeing, RGLPS teachers will continue to build a range of wellbeing tasks in teaching programs to support students to adjust back into school routines. Thus far, all RGLPS classes have been remarkably calm and focused. Students have clearly missed their friends and teachers and have enjoyed the opportunity to interact with each other and enjoy the full breadth of the RGLPS curriculum.

Student Independence

The current social distancing rules restrict parents from entering the school grounds in order to protect our staff. Teachers have found that these rules have had a surprising and positive side effect on student independence.  Even our Prep – Year Two students have been able to walk onsite, find their classrooms, unpack their school bags and settle into learning efficiently and calmly each day. Further, teachers have reported a smoother start to the school day with fewer morning interruptions and delays in starting learning programs. In the past, some children have needed support to separate from their parents which has eaten into valuable learning time. These issues have been largely eliminated in recent days and we hope that this can continue when restrictions are eventually loosened. Let’s all work together to maintain this benefit to student resilience and independence long term!

Assessment and Reporting

In these final weeks of term, teachers will conduct a range of informal assessments to get a sense of student progress over the remote learning period. Please note that our Semester One reports this year will not include progression points (grades) as there is not been sufficient time for teachers to thoroughly assess and judge student achievement levels in the short time frame before reports are released. This is in keeping with advice from the Department of Education and Training.

The modified Semester One 2020 report will include three sections:

  1. Overview of Learning  – An outline of concepts taught onsite during Term One and during Term Two Remote Learning.
  2. General Comment  – A comment focused on your child ‘as a learner.’ This comment will also include information about your child’s engagement and adjustment during remote learning.
  3. Semester One Achievement Highlights – Classroom teachers will outline specific learning highlights for your child. Prep – Year 2 teachers will outline an achievement highlight for English and Mathematics and Year 3-6 teachers will outline a highlight for English, Mathematics and Integrated Studies.

Semester One reports will be released to parents via Compass on Wednesday 24th June 2020.

Three Way Conferences 2020

2020 Three Way Conferences will be held between teacher, parent and student on Wednesday 22nd July 2020.

Students are required to attend on this day to participate in the their Three-Way Conference. Participation in the 15 minute Three-Way Conference provides opportunities for reflection, feedback and individual instruction on how the learning journey for each student can be enhanced and extended moving forward. Teachers will schedule 15 min conferences with families and students between 9am and 6:45pm. Students will be marked present on the attendance roll upon their participation in their scheduled 3WC.

TheirCare will be available if parents/carers need additional supervision for their children across the day. Please do not send your child to school on this date other than for their Three Way Conference.

The school sees the Three Way Conference as a valuable opportunity to celebrate student learning achievement and discuss future learning goals. For this reason, it is important that students are able to participate in the discussion. However, we do understand that sometimes parents and teachers need to discuss private issues. In this case, parents and teachers may request that the child step out during the second half of the conference so the adults can discuss matters privately.

Parents/carers will be able to book in a time for their child’s Three Way Conference via Compass from 9am on June 26th. Three Way Conference bookings will close on Friday the 17th of July at 3.30pm.
