PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Yamaha Wind Orchestra 2019

On Sunday 11th August I was delighted to be invited to attend the Presbyterian Ladies College in Burwood to hear our amazing Senior Concert Band perform at the Yamaha Wind Orchestra performance.

The concert was conducted by Dr Rob McWilliams who is currently Yamaha Music Australia’s Education Outreach Clinician.  This role sees Dr McWilliams assisting ensembles and providing professional development for ensemble conductors.  Previously Dr McWilliams was the Director of Bands & Instrumental Music at the University of Wisconsin.

This concert was part of the Yamaha Wind Orchestra – Professional Development Project. This Project has three aims:

  1. To provide the opportunity for instrumental music teachers to play at a high level.
  2. To provide Professional Development sessions based around repertoire selection, score preparation, rehearsal and conducting
  3. To provide a select number of participants an opportunity to work with the ensemble from rehearsal to performance and be monitored by Dr McWilliams throughout that process.

RGLPS was lucky enough to be invited to be part of this program and the Senior Concert Band performed alongside the Yamaha Wind Orchestra on Sunday.  They were, of course, inspirational!!  The students proudly represented RGLPS and their hard work, dedication and talent was reflected in their performance.

I would like to thank Aaron, Monica and the entire music team for seeking out and providing these amazing opportunities for our students. Thank you to the parents for encouraging their kids to be leap at every challenge and for supporting rehearsals, practices and all the exciting opportunities at these special events.

Past Student Achievement

We would like to pass on our congratulations to Eva Wilson (2018) who has been accepted into the Little Athletics Victoria Junior Development Squad for Discus.  Eva placed fourth at both the Bendigo Country State Championships and the Athletics Victoria State Championships this year and hopes to compete in both discus and hammer throw at the Athletics Victoria All Schools Competition later this year.

Please take the time to read our relevant policies and information surrounding Child Safe Standards, which can be found on our public website. Please be aware that you can contact Denisse Lobos (Acting Assistant Principal in charge of Student Welfare) or me as Principal at any time through the office. Children Arriving TOO Early

Staff have noted that there are a number of children arriving to school far too early. At times children have been seen on school grounds before 8am unsupervised. At no stage should children be dropped at school this yearly. If you require supervision before school, you must book your child into our OSHC program. Staff are not on duty until 8.45am.

Book Week and Writer's Festival

Next week is an exciting week! We have planned a literacy extravaganza and our teams are excited about the opportunities we will be providing for our students and families. From the official opening of our ‘Writer’s Festival’ to ‘Pens Down Wednesday’, to our very own staff pantomime, it is sure to be a week to be remembered. Please make some time to come into school to celebrate literacy with us.

Facilities at RGLPS

This week I stood back and took stock of how far our school has come this past four years. With our new buildings all established and our fantastic new surfaces on the basketball court and triangle, we continue to have facilities which are beyond reproach. Every morning and afternoon when chatting to families, it is lovely to get feedback about how fortunate we are to have such outstanding facilities in our government school. Thank you to everyone who has expressed their gratitude and thankfulness for the investment we have made in ensuring we provide the best facilities for our students and programs.

Annual Parent Survey

If you received a letter from the school regarding the Parent Survey please take the time to complete it. The Parent Opinion Survey deadline has been extended until Sunday 18th August.

Have you joined with us? You will find ongoing updayes from classroom visits to articles of interest. DON'T MISS OUT!

BOOK WEEK

Tuesday 20th August

On Tuesday 20th August we will be celebrating Children’s Book Week with a special dress up day, a visit from author Tony Wilson, the annual House Literature Quiz and some special book reading activities. This year’s theme is “Reading is my Secret Power”.  Students are invited to dress up as their favourite book character or in a costume related to the theme.  Classes will be timetabled to see Tony Wilson during the morning. You may pre-order Tony’s Books using the order form distributed via Compass (please return orders to the school by Wednesday 7th August).  Tony will bring the signed copies of any books purchased with him on the day.

LITERACY

Please note: The work we put into the Newsletter will sometimes be published in its raw form, meaning the work may not be corrected. This is because we choose to celebrate the child as a writer instead of picking apart the piece in the search for errors. Constructive feedback is always given to our students in a range of ways, correcting books with red pen is only one way to give feedback to a student.

SUSTAINABILITY

Green Facts are back for Semester Two, and we want your input!

If you have a fact about the environment, or tips for how we can help preserve our planet (either at home or at school), please share it with us. You can write it on a scrap piece of paper and place it in the labelled box in the 1/2 building outside 1/2G, or enter it online at the following link

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/DWW6DBH

Keep your eyes peeled on each newsletter to see if your Green Fact appears!
