 PRINCIPALS’ REPORT

Stay Well this Winter

Symptoms of influenza (flu) can hit very quickly and may last several weeks. Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself and others from getting the flu. Annual influenza vaccination is recommended from mid-April each year and is free under the National Immunisation Program for those at higher risk of complications from the flu.

Keeping our School Community Well

Parents, carers and students are encouraged to practice prevention measures, including:

  •    –  washing and sanitising hands regularly
  •    –  avoiding touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
  •    –  covering nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing · staying home if unwell and consulting a general practitioner             (GP) or Nurse-on-call as required
  •    – staying up to date with flu and COVID-19 vaccinations.

Flu Vaccinations

Flu vaccinations can be booked through GPs and pharmacies, many of which can also provide COVID-19 vaccinations. Flu vaccination is recommended for everyone aged 6 months and over.

Some people are more at risk of complications from flu and are eligible for free vaccination as part of the National Immunisation Program.

COVID- 19 Booster

The 2023 COVID-19 booster dose is available for everyone aged 18 and above.

Getting your booster dose remains the best way to prevent severe illness or hospitalisation, especially in people aged over 65 and those at higher risk of severe illness.

You can have your booster dose 6 months after your last dose or COVID infection.

Children aged between 5 and 17 years who are at risk of severe illness can also receive a 2023 booster dose. You can get your next dose at your local pharmacy or GP. To find one near you, refer to the vaccine clinic finder.

National Sorry Day is on this Friday 26 May 2023, and will be followed by National Reconciliation Week, from Saturday 27 May.

The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2023 is ‘Be a voice for generations’. It encourages all Australians to be a voice for reconciliation in tangible ways in our everyday lives – where we live, work and socialise.

RGLPS will base content around these important themes during Reconciliation week to enhance the theme in our own community. I know how articulate and passionate our students and I can’t wait to see them engage in being a voice for generations.

Take care.

APPLY NOW TO ENROL YOUR CHILD IN PREP FOR 2024

The Department of Education has released a new statewide timeline for enrolling in Foundation (Prep) for the 2024 school year.

If you have a child starting primary school in 2024, it’s time to enrol. Make sure to submit your enrolment application by Friday 28 July 2023.

If you are enrolling the sibling of a student at our school for Foundation in 2024, and both children will be attending our school at the same time, your child is prioritised for a place at our school as per the department’s Placement Policy.

It is important to follow the statewide timeline to enrol your child in Foundation. Enrolling your child in line with the timelines allows us to plan our classrooms, staffing and transition activities and ensures your child has the best start to school.

For more information, please read about when and how to enrol your child in Foundation at vic.gov.au/enrolling-foundation-prep.

Prep enrolment packs are available in the foyer at the school office.

STUDENTS OF THE WEEK

TEACHING & LEARNING

Assessment and Reporting

RGLPS teachers are currently writing general comments and conducting assessments for Semester One 2023 reports. These will be released to parents on Wednesday 21st June, 2023.

RGLPS teachers also report on student learning on a regular basis using the Seesaw platform. Classroom teachers annotate student portfolio samples each term in the following areas:

  •     –  Reading
  •     –  Writing
  •     –  Speaking and Listening
  •     –  Mathematics (Number and Algebra)
  •     –  Mathematics (Statistics and Probability OR Measurement and Geometry)
  •     –  Inquiry

On occasion, teachers may annotate multiple content areas through one rich task. An example of this might be an oral presentation of an inquiry project, where the teacher makes annotations about inquiry and speaking and listening on the one task. Please also note that portfolios may not be polished or end of unit pieces as they are intended as a ‘snapshot in time’ of learning.

Specialist teachers provide a learning sample for their respective subject area each semester. Specialist portfolio samples are unable to be annotated due to the high volume of students each specialist teacher works with across a semester.

Simultaneous Storytime 2023

RGLPS students had lots of fun participating in ‘National Simultaneous Storytime’ on Wednesday. Classes enjoyed ‘The Speedy Sloth’, by Rebecca Young and Health McKenzie, along with up to one million children across the country.

Here is a photo of some of our Prep students enjoying the read aloud of ‘The Speedy Sloth’ by the author.
