PRINCIPALS’ REPORT
Welcome everyone to the final edition of our term 1 newsletter. It has been a belter of a term with multiple highlights and opportunities to celebrate student learning. From a successful start to the school year for our transitioning prep students to the student hosted market stalls from our students at the other end of the school, term 1 has brought us multiple opportunities to engage in school and reconnect as learners. Our 1 and 2 students have already successfully completed swimming lessons and our 3 to 6 students have had numerous opportunities to show off their skills in the sporting field. From tutoring to enrichment to resilience and wellbeing. It has been a multi-faceted term of learning at Golf Links.
Update on Student Free Days
The Department of Education has advised that all Victorian Schools can now hold 5 student free days per calendar year. Like last year 4 of the days are the traditional curriculum days and the fifth day is used as a common professional practice day (PPD) for teaching staff. The school council has determined that our whole school PPD will be on the 13th of June following the Kings Birthday public holiday. Please make alternative arrangements for student supervision on this day. We will engage with TheirCare and attempt to arrange care for the day.
School Council Sub-Committees
Don’t forget, our school council sub-committees are open to new community members. We would love to have even more parent voice on support on these important committees.
If you do have an interest in joining one of the subcommittees, please contact me and I will set the wheels in motion.
Education Week
Now in its 79th year, Education Week celebrates the strengths and achievements of Victoria’s government education sector.
This year Victoria will celebrate Education Week from Sunday 14 May to Saturday 20 May.
This year’s theme is ‘Active Learners: Move, Make, Motivate’ which celebrates physical activity, hands-on-learning and student voice in education.
Keep your eye on the newsletter as we will advertise the various activities as we get closer to the date.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Farewell for Term 2
As some of you may know already, I am heading off on a trip with my family for Term 2. I would like to thank everyone for your amazing support and positivity over a sometimes challenging Term 1. I wish everyone a peaceful and restful break, be it short or long.
In my absence Jane Black and Kerron Worsdell are sharing many elements of my role. Should you need anything or have questions send your queries to rosanna.golf.links.ps@education.vic.gov.au. The office staff will then direct your emails to the most relevant person.
Parent Cyber Safety
Thank you to all respondents to the survey about when to run our Cyber Safety sessions. Most respondents were interested in a session run at 7:00 pm in the evening.
We will be holding several sessions run by Evolve next term. Our staff will be learning and developing skills and knowledge along side our parent sessions. Please see the attached flyer to register your interest.

2023 Victorian Premier's Reading Challenge
RGLPS students have read over 200 books already in the 2023 Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge! https://vprc.eduweb.vic.gov.au/home
The 2023 Challenge:
Prep – Year 2 students Read 30 books – including 20 or more from the Challenge Book List
Year 3-6 students Read 15 books – including 10 or more from the Challenge Book List
A reminder that all students who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate from the Victorian Premier, The Hon. Daniel Andrews MP. Certificates will be awarded at an assembly during Term 4.
I am looking forward to logging into the Challenge again after the holidays and seeing all the books that have been read over the break!
Relaxation Reading...
On that matter, holiday reading is a great way to relax and for children to maintain their reading skills over the break. I have already amassed a have a pile of books I am looking forward to starting next week! Please encourage your child to keep up their reading over the upcoming school holidays. To supplement reading materials in the home, I also recommend a trip to your local library – many libraries will also have events on which are well worth investigating.
I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday break and I look forward to continuing to keep you updated on teaching and learning at RGLPS again in Term 2.

NATIONAL YOUNG LEADERS DAY 2023
Introduction:
On Monday the 27th of March 10 students from RGLPS went to the Halogen National Young Leaders Day in the city. Along with 4,000 other students, our school leaders listened to inspirational speakers talk about their journey and experiences! Here are what some of our students who participated thought about the speakers:
STEM NEWS
SCIENCE TALENT SEARCH
Does your child have a passion for science? If so, the Science Talent Search (STS) might be for them. The STS is a highly successful state-wide science competition. It is based around Victorian Curriculum principles, encouraging students to pursue creative, open-ended projects and hone their science inquiry skills.
This year’s theme is Innovations: Powering Future Industries. Students can work individually, or with a partner, to investigate an area of science that interests them. They need to be committed to completing the project in their own time and using their own resources. Projects must be student’s own ideas and work, but parent support at home will be essential for success.
Students can choose to demonstrate their science learning through the following categories:
- – Experimental Research
- – Picture Story Books (Creative Writing)*
- – Inventions
- – Working Models
- – Posters – Scientific Wallcharts*
- – Games
- – Computer Programs – Games and Simulations
- – Science Photography
- – Video Productions
* Must follow given topics relating to this year’s theme
All students who submit an entry into the competition will receive a certificate. There are also monetary prizes for students who perform well.
KEY DATES
Friday 5 May – Applications to participate due to Sandy (STEM teacher)
Friday 12 May – Successful applicants notified*
Friday 14 July – Submissions due to Sandy (STEM teacher)
Saturday 5 August – Judging Day (students must be able to attend this day)
*There is a small entry fee of $9 for individual entries and $17 for partner entries
There will be an information session for any interested students during the last week of Term 1.

EARTH DAY
SPORT NEWS
Region Swimming
On Thursday last week, our largest ever contingent of swimmers headed to Watermarc for the Northern Region Swimming Championships. Looking back at the last ten years or so, we usually have about 2 or 3 students make this level, so to have 11 having a chance to make the State Final was phenomenal! The team spirit was very high with all of our students cheering each other for good luck before and during the race, and lots of ‘well done!’ for every swimmer upon their return. Everyone swam at their very best with lots of new personal bests being swum. Congratulations to Will B who received a 2nd place medallion and to the U11 Girls Freestyle Relay team who won 3rd place medallions for their efforts! With the swimming championships now coming to a close for RGLPS, I’d like to say thank you to all of the parents for driving their children to swimming practice and also to Penny and Jordan for driving our team to the Region Finals as well.
District Athletics
On Friday last week, 82 RGLPS students headed to the District Athletics Carnival to compete with our local schools. It was perfect weather for the event, and also the perfect start with Ellie V winning the very first event, the U12 Hurdles, by about 10m sending our team into a frenzy! From then on, it was a very busy day for all of our students throwing, jumping and sprinting their way around Willinda Park. I was very proud of all of the students who gave their best and were very supportive of the students from the other schools, giving them tips on how to do better – especially to St Pius students who returned to the District Athletics after a 10 year absence from District Events. I look forward to the official results coming through and seeing how many of our students will progress to the next level as there were a lot of ribbons on our chests by the end of the day!

AUSLAN SIGN OF THE WEEK
NEW PROCEDURE FOR PREP 2024 ENROLMENTS
Enrolments for Prep 2024 will work differently to previous years. The State Government has introduced a new state-wide enrolment timeline for all government primary schools. Their aim is to make the enrolment process clearer and more equitable for all families.
Here’s how the prep 2024 enrolments will work:
TERM 1
- Schools cannot accept any prep enrolments in term 1, 2023.
- School tours can commence and will continue during term 2.
- In late term 1, a ‘Prep Enrolment Information Pack for Schools for Parents/Carers for the 2024 school year’ will be distributed to all families by early childhood service providers (kindergartens and childcare centres). The pack will also be available from the school if required.
TERM 2
- Monday 24th April 2023: from this date enrolments can be submitted using the ‘Application to Enrol in a Victorian Government School Form’ from the information pack.
- Open days, information sessions and Education Week celebrations will be held.
TERM 3
- Friday 28th July 2023: enrolment applications are due.
- Friday 11th August: families will receive written notification of their enrolment outcome.
- Friday 25th August: due date for families to return their completed ‘School Enrolment Form’ to accept their prep offer. This form will be included with your letter of offer.
TERM 4
- Prep 2024 transition sessions will take place
