PRINCIPALS’ REPORT
What a wonderful week! We started off with an amazing book week parade where many of my personal literary favourites roamed the school for the day. Who could forget our Prep team of 101 Dalmatians with Cruella casting a wicked shadow all day. Then there was the Hogwarts crew with what seemed like hundreds of the many magical characters sparking wonderful conversations around the school. I am so glad that we have been able to do so many wonderful things as a community this year and am just grateful to see all of the excited faces around the school.
A huge thankyou to RGLPS students, staff and parents for getting into the spirit and supporting this fun, whole school event. Thankyou also to Helen Hodson for running the Book Week Library Quiz and for organising the best costume prizes for each class!
Our piano festival was also in full flight this week with multiple students performing for our community. Next week is our big band night and our Writers Festival is just around the corner. Things are starting to get back to normal.
Nude Food
Don’t forget our nude food policy. We are trying hard to reduce waste at school. We encourage all students to use reusable containers.
2022 Parent/ Caregiver/ Guardian Opinion Survey
Don’t forget that the 2022 parent/caregiver/guardian opinion survey is now open. The Parent/Caregiver/Guardian Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of families’ perceptions of school climate, student behavior, and student engagement. We encourage all families to participate in this survey. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies.
While previously a random sample of approximately 30 per cent of parents/caregivers/guardians have been selected to participate, this year, all families are invited to participate in the survey.
The survey will be conducted online, only takes 20 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any convenient time within the fieldwork period on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones.
The survey link and instructions have been emailed to families. Should you need additional support, please contact the office.

Mobile Devices - Ministerial Order
Last week we attended the North Eastern Regional principal forum. In this meeting we were briefed about the importance of implementing this order with fidelity. We can understand that many students carry or wear devices to and from school for safety reasons. However, we must ensure that all smart devices (capable of connecting to another device, making calls or texts or taking photos) are handed into the office on arrival. We will store these devices and have them ready to hand back at the end of the day.
We are aware of smart watches that can be put into ‘school mode’ and this disables the ‘smart’ features of the watch. We ask that these devices are also handed in for secure storage also. It is not possible to check so many individual devices and ascertain if they are being correctly configured to adhere with this policy.
All classrooms have clocks to enable them to access the time.

Drop Off in the Morning
Supervision 8.45am - 3.45pm
We are starting to see many students turning up far too early to school. Students should only be dropped off at 8:45am. Our teachers are not on duty before this time and not actively monitoring the yard. Should you require your child to be at school before this time, you must access before school care with Theircare. www.theircare.com.au
We will be following up with early arrivals and will ask you to make appropriate arrangements.

SMILE SQUAD DENTAL VISITS
Every child deserves and healthy smile
Smile Squad hits the road in Banyule – Rosanna Golf Links Primary School
All children deserve a healthy smile and the Smile Squad are coming to Banyule – Rosanna Golf Links Primary School to help make sure this happens.
Smile Squad is the exciting new State Government program that will provide free, high quality dental care to all Victorian public primary and secondary school students.
Smile Squad is set to improve the oral health of more than 650,000 children, saving families both time and money, and all without having to leave the school grounds.
Smile Squad dental vans will provide free examinations and treatment including teeth cleaning, fluoride applications, fillings and any other non-cosmetic treatments to make sure our young people have healthy teeth.
Smile Squad is staffed by experienced oral health therapists, dental therapists, dental assistants and dentists. They all have extensive experience treating children and a passion for improving their oral health – for life.

One Week to Go!!! - '2022 RGLPS Arts and Writing Festival'
There is now only one week until our ‘2022 RGLPS Arts and Writing Festival’.
The RGLPS community is fairly bursting with excitement at the prospect of viewing the wonderful creativity of our student writers and artists on display. We hope to see lots of family and friends at the Opening Ceremony at 6pm on Monday September 5th and throughout the Festival Week. We are expecting a very large crowd at the Festival Launch and recommend that all guests wear a mask to protect against COVID and various bugs currently doing the rounds. We also ask that any small children who visit the Festival are closely supervised by an adult to ensure displayed student work is not damaged.

'Author Talks' Incursions
There is less than one week for parents to consent and pay for their child to participate in the professional author presentations and workshops planned as part of the ‘2022 RGLPS Arts and Writing Festival’. The charge per student is $10 and consent is required by Wednesday 31st August.
Prep – Year 2
Prep – Year 2 students will enjoy two 50 min interactive presentations with authors Sue de Gennaro and Maria La Selva.

Each Year 3/4 class will enjoy a 60-minute Writing Workshop with author Andrew McDonald.

Tournament of Mind 2022 (TOM)
State Finalists
Huge congratulations to the ‘2022 RGLPS Tournament of Mind Team’ for winning their Challenge at the Northern Metro Final on the weekend.
This means that the RGLPS Team are now through to the Victorian State Final, which will be held on Sunday September 11th. This is very exciting news, and we believe it is the first time RGLPS has had a team reach the Victorian Final!
Big congratulations to Ainsley H, Eva L, Jade D, Ella M, Lawson P, Allie G and Laila K for their work over the last six weeks. Thank-you also to those parents, friends and family members who were able to attend the Northern Metro Regional Final and support the team last weekend. I would also like to extend my appreciation to Sarah McLellan for co-facilitating Tournament of Mind sessions with me this term.

2002 ICAS
Next week, the final ICAS for 2022 will take place on Wednesday 31st August. Please note the change of date (was previously advertised as Tuesday 30th August). This change was necessary due to Planning Week next week and to ensure staffing to administer the ICAS. I remind parents that there is a strict one week sitting window for each ICAS so it may not always be possible to hold a makeup test if your child is absent on their scheduled ICAS test date.

2022 Premier's Reading Challange
The ‘2022 Premier’s Reading Challenge’ runs for another two weeks. If your child has been working towards this year’s Challenge, please ensure that they register their books before the end date (Friday 2nd September 2022). An instructional guide for navigating the Challenge website is available on Compass under School Documentation.
Certificates will be presented to students who completed the Challenge at an assembly later in the year.

Bead Pattern Challenge
A string of coloured beads begins with a red, then a green, then a blue, then a yellow. This pattern is repeated many times.
What colour is the 26th bead?
Hint: Use multiplying by 4 to get closer to 26 before solving which colour would be in that position… OR draw a picture/use beads at home to model the problem.
Extra Challenge: Create your own different patterns, then challenge yourself to find the bead that would be in a particular position.

SIGN OF THE WEEK
DEAF FACILITY NEWS
From our building works and COVID, we haven’t had much of an opportunity to get together as a Deaf Facility. It’s nice to develop our community again, by introducing Deaf Facility assemblies. Last week we held our first Deaf Facility assembly. We are aiming to have one or two a term, to celebrate our successes and further develop our community. It was a good opportunity to socialise with other deaf or hard of hearing people, have other deaf and hard of hearing role models, people to look up to, develop a community and get to know each other better. We congratulated Sam for making it to Nationals for cross country and played games to get to know each other better. Hopefully at the end of the term, we can have a family picnic after school to help our parents network with other families too.
