IMPORTANT DATES!

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Everyone seems to be enjoying the return to school this year. I can report that we have very settled classrooms and our new Preps are really enjoying making new friends while they develop some great learning behaviours. It has been wonderful to get out and about and see lots of smiling faces. Start Up has been successful and we are now keen to sink our teeth into some great learning.

COVID Safety Updates

As you probably already know arrangements have been made to send out our second batch of RA tests. We will be sending them home with students on Monday. If you would like to pick yours up directly please email the school account to make arrangements to do so.

As a DET school we are bound to follow the safety protocols sent to all Victorian Government schools. We are hoping that the restrictions that we are implementing are short term with hope for a four week block and then possible easing. Right now the additional safety precautions in schools are as follows.

  • Strongly recommended twice weekly RA testing for staff and students
  • Mandated masks for year 3 – 6 students, strongly recommended for Prep – 2 students
  • Reduce the mixing of students (Bubbled play spaces. These are based on the age of students and the play equipment best suited to a particular age group).
  • Air Purifiers in learning spaces
  • Outdoor music lessons and band rehearsals
  • Staff to meet via Webex
  • Staff to use the staff room for food preparation only
  • Outdoor assemblies with student and staff attendance only

Some of these restrictions are not conducive to the community building that want for our school, but we are hoping that we will be able to change this soon and invite our community back into the school so that we can all share the learning journey of our students. Thanks to everyone for supporting our safety measures. It has been amazing to see so many masks in our yard space.

Meet the Teacher Evening

Last year our meet the teacher interviews gave our students a really solid foundation to start the year. We will continue with the same format. Bookings will open on Monday the 14th of February. Once again just to be safe we will run these sessions through Webex during the week beginning on the 21st of February. Each session will be 10 minutes in duration. Once your booking has been made classroom teachers will send out a link to the meeting as confirmation of your time slot. Please note these are not sessions for reporting as classroom teachers have not yet had time to accurately assess each student’s point of need. They are a great opportunity for you to share information about your children and to open the lines of communication with a new classroom teacher. Please note that SSG’s will commence the following week. SSG’s are in lieu of a meet the teacher session.

A getting to know your child form has been posted on Compass. It would be greatly beneficial if you could return a copy to your child/ren’s classroom teacher by Friday the 18th of February in preparation for the meet the teacher session.

School Council

An election is to be conducted for members of the School Council of Rosanna Golf Links Primary School.

Nomination forms may be collected from the office from Thursday the 17th of February and must be lodged by 4pm on Thursday, 24th February 2022.

The ballot (if required) will close at 4pm on Thursday, 3rd March 2022.

Following the closing of nominations a list of the nominations received will be posted at the school. The terms of office, membership categories and number of positions in each membership category open for election are as follows –

If the number of nominations is less than the number of vacancies, a notice to that effect and calling for further nominations will be posted in a prominent position at the school.

Take care,

ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS’ REPORT

COVID Vaccinations

It’s been really fantastic to see such excitement around the return to school and we want to keep it that way. A crucial part of that is getting as many students vaccinated as possible.

Alongside ventilation and other vital COVIDSafe steps such as regular rapid antigen testing, supporting as many students as possible to be vaccinated will help make our school as safe as possible.

Bookings for children aged 5 to 11 to receive the paediatric Pfizer vaccine are open and we encourage parents and carers to get your child vaccinated, if you haven’t already done so.

The Pfizer vaccine is safe and recommended for children. The vaccine will help protect your child from getting sick from COVID-19, help to reduce the spread of COVID-19, and help ensure kids can have more time at school and playing with their friends.

Vaccinations for children aged 5-11 years old are delivered at 2 appointments, 8 weeks apart. Children with specific medical vulnerabilities can access their second dose 3 weeks after their first dose.

If you’d like more information about this, you can read a recent statement from the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI): https://www.health.gov.au/news/atagi-update-following-weekly-covid-19-meeting-19-january-2022

To book an appointment

You can book at your local GP or pharmacy: https://covid-vaccine.healthdirect.gov.au/booking

You can also book at a family-friendly vaccination centre by calling the Coronavirus Hotline on 1800 675 398.

You can also make vaccination centre bookings for your children online, though you will need to use an email address that has not been used in the system before: https://portal.cvms.vic.gov.au/

Helping children to get their vaccination

Vaccination centres understand that children may feel anxious about vaccination or have other support needs. A range of options are available to help children get vaccinated. Please discuss your child’s needs with the vaccination centre when you book an appointment.

Appointments are also available at Aboriginal Controlled Community Health Organisations.

ICAS 2021

I have received the ICAS Writing results and certificates from late last year. You will remember that these were delayed due to the lockdown/s and postponed testing window. Results and certificates for the other 2021 ICAS are yet to arrive at the school.

I am happy to announce the following 2021 ICAS Writing results:

Credit: Rebecca R, Madeleine O, Alexander K, Ava C, Lachie B, Mia B. These results placed students in the next 25% of                          participants – well done!.

We love reading at RGLPS!

We are extremely fortunate to have such enthusiastic readers at RGLPS. All RGLPS classes engage in independent reading daily and work towards increasing their reading stamina, building decoding skills and overall comprehension through our explicit teaching and lessons.

Over the ‘Start Up’ period, I have been surveying 4SK students about their reading preferences and behaviours. I have been really excited to learn that that nearly 100% of students report that they love reading and engaged in reading for fun over the summer break. As I have stated previously, regular reading has been shown to have a host of academic, social and mental health benefits. Aside from improved reading skills, here are some of the other positive impacts of regular reading:

  • Improvements in writing – students learn about writing structure and genres and are exposed to quality models of cohesive and creative writing.
  •     – Improvements in spelling due to continual exposure to words and patterns.
  •     – An expanded vocabulary due to ongoing exposure to new words and concepts in a range of varied contexts.
  •     – Increased levels of empathy and an enhanced ability to recognise and understand other points of view.
  •     – Greater acceptance of difference, disability, and other cultures.
  •     – Greater general knowledge and conceptual understanding of the world around us.
  •     – Improved concentration levels and ability to focus.
  •     – Greater overall wellbeing – neuroscience has shown that reading calms the mind and relaxes the body.
  •     – A strengthening in the connections or ‘schema’ in our brains.
  •     – Higher levels of creativity and imagination.

Reading is really one of the best things you can do to enrich your child’s learning. Please continue to support the work we do at school by encouraging your child to develop a reading routine at home each day. Engaging your child in regular discussions about their reading further extends their comprehension and understanding. Our ‘Meet the Teacher’ online meetings from the 21st February 2022 are an ideal time to discuss strategies to support your child with reading in the home. Please see Compass updates for information on how to make a booking.

Have a great week everyone!

PRIVACY COLLECTION NOTICE

Information for students, parents and carers

The Department of Education and Training (the Department) values your privacy and is committed to protecting the personal and health information that schools collect.

All school staff must comply with Victorian privacy law and the Schools’ Privacy Policy. This notice explains how the Department, including Victorian government schools (schools), handles personal and health information. On occasion, specific consent will be sought for the collection and use of information, for example, for a student to receive a health service. Our schools are also required by legislation, such as the Education and Training Reform Act 2006, to collect some of this information.

Throughout this notice, ‘staff’ includes principals, teachers, student support service officers, youth workers, social workers, nurses and any other allied health practitioners, and all other employees, contractors, volunteers and service providers of the school and the Department.

On enrolment, and during the ordinary course of a student’s attendance at a school, schools will collect information about students and their families for the following purposes:

  • educating students
  • supporting students’ social and emotional wellbeing, and health
  • fulfilling legal obligations, including duty of care, anti-discrimination law and occupational health and safety law
  • communicating and engaging with parents
  • student administration
  • school management
  • supporting policy in relation to student education and wellbeing.

If this information is not collected, schools may be unable to provide optimal education or support to students or fulfil legal obligations.

For example, our schools rely on parents to provide health information about any medical condition or disability that their child has, medication their child may take while at school, any known allergies and contact details of their child’s doctor. If parents do not provide all relevant health information, this may put their child’s health at risk.

Our schools also require current, relevant information about all parents and carers so that schools can take account of safety concerns that affect their children. Parents should provide schools with copies of all current parenting plans and court orders about or that affect their children and provide updated copies when they change.

When parents enrol their child in primary school, they will be asked to provide personal and health information in several ways, including via the Enrolment Form, the School Entrance Health Questionnaire (SEHQ) and the Early Childhood Intervention Service (ECIS) Transition Form.

The Enrolment Form is used to collect information that is essential for the purposes listed above, and requests information such as:

  • Emergency contacts – Individuals parents nominate for a school to contact during an emergency. Parents should ensure that their nominated emergency contact agrees to their contact details being provided to the school and that they understand their details may be disclosed by the Department if lawful, e.g. in the case of emergency communications relating to bush fires or floods.
  • Student background information – Information about country of birth, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origin, language spoken at home and parent occupation. This information enables the Department to allocate appropriate resources to schools. The Department also uses this information to plan for future educational needs in Victoria and shares some information with the Commonwealth government to monitor, plan and allocate resources.
  • Immunisation status – This assists schools to manage health risks and legal obligations. The Department may also provide this information to the Department of Health and Department of Families, Fairness and Housing to assess immunisation rates in Victoria, but not in a way which identifies students.
  • Visa status – This is required to process a student’s enrolment.

All schools may use departmental systems and online tools such as apps and other software to effectively collect and manage information about students and families for the purposes listed above.

When schools use these online tools, they take steps to ensure that student information is secure. If parents or carers have any concerns about the use of these online tools, please contact the school.

School staff will only share student and family information with other school staff who need to know to enable them to educate or support the student as described above. Information will only be shared outside the school (and outside the Department) as required or authorised by law, including where sharing is required to meet duty of care, anti-discrimination, occupational health and safety, and child wellbeing and safety obligations. The information collected will not be disclosed beyond the school and Department without parent consent unless such disclosure is lawful.

When a student transfers to another school (including Catholic, independent and interstate), personal and/or health information about that student may be transferred to the next school. Transferring this information is in the best interests of the student and assists the next school to provide the best possible education and support to the student. For further detail about how and what level of information is provided to the next school, refer to the: Enrolment: Student transfers between schools

Schools only provide school reports and ordinary school communications to students, parents, carers or others who have a legal right to that information. Requests for access to other student information or by others must be made by lodging a Freedom of Information (FOI) application.

To update student or family information, parents should contact their school.

For more information about how schools and the Department collect and manage personal and health information, or how to access personal and health information held by a school about you or your child, refer to the: Schools’ Privacy Policy

MATHS NEWS

Maths Riddle

Well done to those who attempted and solved last week’s riddle. The answer to the problem is that Mr Smith can group his 28 students in 6 different ways. See the different ways below:

Here’s this week’s challenge. I’ll share the answer in next week’s newsletter.

Towers of 100 Challenge

Hint: For the towers that have no starting numbers, use trial and error to see which three choices would add to 100.

Extra challenge: Make some of your own number tower problems using the symbols and values above OR you might make completely new towers that add to a different target total.

If you’d like to share your response or have your own challenges featured in our newsletter, please send them to sarah.mclellan@education.vic.gov.au

SCIENCE NEWS

Caterpillars

The caterpillars have arrived! As part of our learning across the school about ‘Living Things’ and in particular for the Grades 1 and 2 who are focussing on life cycles this term, we have set up a caterpillar display.  They are eating a LOT of the milkweed plant and growing bigger every day. Eventually, they will be Monarch Butterflies.

SPORT NEWS

GOLF

Hi Parents,

I had some great news earlier this week that one of our students Emily M, had gained a golf scholarship for her club! I decided to investigate if there was a pathway through School Sport Victoria for her to enter any competitions and discovered that there are primary school competitions for the Northern Region that can be entered for students in Grades 3,4,5 and 6. Success at this tournament can lead to a Second Round competition and eventually to the Primary School State Final for Golf.

If your child plays regularly plays golf on a golf course (as opposed to mini-golf with a putter), is skilled at the sport and you think they would enjoy the opportunity to participate in a day long competition as a representative of RGLPS, please get in touch with me at darren.peters@education.vic.gov.au . The next Northern Region competition is at Mandalay Golf Club in Beveridge on the 17/3/2022 at 9:30am.

Kind Regards,
