PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

It has been a warm and wonderful week at RGLPS. We have welcomed the start to summer and hope that the warm days continue.

State Wide Orientation Day

A reminder that Tuesday the 7th of December is our whole school transition day. Many Year 6 students will be transitioning to their Secondary School on this day. Those who are not scheduled to attend a Secondary School will be given the opportunity to support the younger students to access their new classroom. An alternative program will be provided for students who will not be attending RGLPS in 2022.

On Tuesday our 2022 students will spend the day with their new teacher, in a classroom with their new classmates. We welcome the opportunity to support our students to feel safe and comfortable in their new spaces so that 2022 can start positively for them. This is especially important taking the context of this year into consideration.

Parent payments 2022

Don’t forget our new look parent payments policy is up on Compass with information regarding the 2022 products.

Opportunities for payment will be available on the 27th of January but you can also make payments through Compass at any time.

If you are in a position to support the school with a voluntary contribution, these have been itemised within the parent payment form for your convenience. As a government funded school there are limits to the extracurricular programs that we can provide for our students and these additional supports really strengthen those extracurricular opportunities.  Every donation is welcomed.

Please note the following timeline for collection.

We are very flexible about these times and will have sibling items available at all times.

Be Sunsmart

The temperature is heating up and the UV index is consistently high at this time of year. This is a reminder to all families that being sunsmart is very important to protect you and your families health and minimise the chances of potential issues later in life. Please ensure your child has sunscreen in their bag (preferably roll on). Teachers will be reminding all students to apply before heading out and making sure hats are worn at all times. We have provided additional sunscreen to all classrooms and we have a supply in the office too.

Performing Arts Payment has now Closed

The (previously known) Performing Arts Payment 2021 has now closed on Compass. This payment was originally for our Term Three Production but has since been transferred to an exciting Wellbeing Day filled with show rides and pizza for lunch on Wednesday 15th December.

If you would like your child to participate, we are still taking payments; however, please call the office directly to make payment.

Wellbeing Day Pizza Lunch Orders

Pizza orders were due on Monday 29th December. For those who did not complete the Wellbeing Day pizza lunch order survey that was posted in the News Feed via Compass and in the newsletter, we have ordered Margherita pizzas as the default choice.

TRAFFIC SAFETY

There has been some alarming behaviour by parents dropping off and collecting students from school over the last few weeks.  A student was almost seriously injured in Finlayson Street when dropped by their parent on the opposite side of the road and then did not use the school crossing when crossing the road.

Please ask your children, or assist your children, to exit your car curbside for your own and your children’s safety. Please ensure your child is dropped safely on the school side of the road.  If they are dropped on the opposite side, accompany them across the road and always use the school crossing.

Please drive slowly and carefully near the school, children are unpredictable.  Please be patient when you drop off and collect your children from school.

TEACHING AND LEARNING

ICAS 2021

Once again, congratulations to all students who participated in ICAS!

We have received notification that the results and certificates will be delivered to school during Term 1, 2022. Please keep an eye on the newsletter to stay up to date on how these will be presented in the new year.

If your child will be graduating or leaving Golf Links at the end of this year, we will mail these to you. For those who are moving house, please ensure you contact the office and let them know your new mailing address so we are able to ensure your child receives their certificate.

MATHS QUIZ

Well done to everyone who solved the problem from last week. The answer to the Pikachu Challenge is 1. See below for the values of the other Pokemon:

See if you can solve this week’s riddle below.  I’ll share the answer in the newsletter next week.Place Value Challenge:

I am a three-digit number. My tens digit is six more than my ones digit. My hundreds digit is eight less than my tens digit. What number am I?

HINT: Use a Place Value chart, like the one below, to help you.

HINT: Start by using trial and error to solve the value of the other Pokemon.

Extra challenge: Create your own problems using Pokemon, Emojis or other pictures of your choice. Start by writing out your problems using numbers, then swap the numbers for pictures. It’s helpful to have the same number appear multiple times to assist the person solving the problem.

If you’d like to share, please send your solutions and challenges to sarah.mclellan@education.vic.gov.au

Extra challenge: Create your own Place Value problems by writing a number, then creating hints to solve each digit. You don’t have to stop at three-digit numbers, but should provide a hint for each digit.

If you’d like to share, please send your solutions and challenges to sarah.mclellan@education.vic.gov.au

SPORTS NEWS

Teeball Finals

Finally, Semi/Grand Final day arrived after months of waiting thanks to several lockdowns cancelling the event three times. Unfortunately for Banyule and Rosanna Primary, Covid-19 cases at their school forced them to withdraw from the finals; all of our RGLPS players felt sorry for their fellow Grade 6s and I sent an email on behalf of them to those schools that we were thinking of them.

First up were the boys who played their Semi-Final against Heidelberg PS. Our batting got off to a rocky start and we only scored 3 runs in the first inning, however we recovered well and scored the maximum 7 runs for the inning. At the end of the 2nd innings, Heidelberg were only ahead by 1 run with the scores 10-11. Unfortunately for us, we had a couple of strike outs and with only one out left in our favour, we could only add one run to our total. Heidelberg then batted superbly and scored the maximum of 7 runs for their final innings. The final score was 11-18 – and congratulations to Heidelberg who eventually went on to win the premiership against St Martin’s – to come from third place and defeat first place in a Grand Final was an amazing effort! Our boys had done such a fantastic job all season and I am so proud of all of them. You played your best on the day and I hope that next year in high school that you try out for your school’s baseball team and hopefully capture that premiership flag!

The girls then took to the diamond in a straight up Grand Final against Heidelberg PS as Rosanna and Banyule had to withdraw. It was probably the best opening innings I have seen in a final in my many years of coaching, with 4 girls scoring home runs and 3 girls scoring 2nd base hits – absolutely incredible. Heidelberg was undeterred and then scored 5 runs of their own to ensure it wouldn’t be all our way. In the 2nd innings we scored 3 runs and managed to hold Heidelberg scoreless for a 10-5 lead. The girls then piled on five runs and took an unassailable 15-6 lead in the third inning. Knowing the premiership was theirs, we could have fun in the fourth inning and saw out the Grand Final with a further 4 runs for a final score of 19-7. Congratulations to the girls who completed an undefeated season for the 2nd season in a row! You played as a team all season and always did it for each other. A special mention must go to Adele R. who hit two home runs, a 3 base hit and a 2 base hit during our offense and was part of ALL 12 of Heidelberg’s outs for our defence – without doubt the best ‘best on ground’ I’ve ever seen in a Grand Final!

Finally, with my PE Teacher hat now on instead of my Teeball Coach one, I wish to express what an amazingly successful season the class of 2021 has achieved! This is the first time that anyone at RGLPS can remember that every single one of our inter school sport teams have made the finals and it has been through your hard effort at training that you have reached this height. A special thank you to the teachers who gave up their lunchtimes voluntarily to help our kids be their best – without your care, knowledge, kindness and support, our students could have not achieved such a feat.

2021 Final Placings: Girls Teeball – Premiers, Netball B – Runners Up, Boys Teeball – Semi Finalists, Netball A – Semi Finalists, AFL – Semi Finalists.

Looking forward to 2021,

Darren Peters

PE and Sports Coordinator

Netball Finals

On Friday, the Interschool sports netball team walked to Macleod Nets Stadium to play the finals. The first game was Netball A semi-finals against Rosanna. It was a tough game against a good side, but the whole team did the best they could. In the end, the score was 19 -13 Rosanna’s way. The most valuable player in the A team was Olivia, as she always tried her hardest to get the ball, and had great team spirit. Well done to the Netball A team, and thank you to Miss Taylor and Mrs Hildebrand for being great coaches.

On Friday, 26th November 2021, the netball B team walked down to the Macleod and played St Martins and won by 1 point. In the Grand Final we played Heidelberg and lost 3-20. Everyone played so well and everyone improved so much over the season. We have 2 MVP’s for this season. Charli Stephenson, for her incredible help getting the ball up the court and Laila Kent for her strong defence. Well done to all of the Netball B team on a great season, and thank you to Miss Taylor and Mrs Hilderbrand for all your help coaching us.

RGLPS CHRISTMAS TREE APPEAL

CANTEEN

Dear Parents,

I hope you are all going well and adjusting to the new way of life.

As it is the end of the school year and because of COVID we cannot always get the supplies we need, so that is the reason for changes. Keep ordering on Flexischools as we have stock on countdown, and as we run out of one thing we will ass another to use up stock.

LAST DAY FOR LUNCH ORDERS WILL BE NEXT FRIDAY 10th DECEMBER.

We will sell icy poles and the remaining chips etc. that we have for recess and lunch over the counter sales for Monday 13th and Wednesday 15th of December.

Peta and I have really enjoyed being back and catching up with kids, but we do miss our canteen helpers and look forward to catching up next year.  In the mean time we are having great help from our grade 6 kids serving over the counter at recess and lunch.  They are a great support to us.

Regards
