PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Well, we really are back into the swing of things now. This week we welcomed our 2022 Prep cohort for their first transition morning. Our leadership team probably had more fun than anyone with Sarah and me taking the current Preps for a Kung-Fu Panda dance and Luke and Denisse having some fun in the library. It did give us all some time to reflect on the exhausting and exhilarating life of a Prep teacher. By Wednesday our Year 3 and 4 students were off to camp. This was the first camp experience for our students, and it has certainly been an exciting one thus far. We are really pleased that other activities will be back for the remainder of the term and we will just keep working on the Learning and Wellbeing of our students as the two foci really do complement each other so well.

Drop Off and Pick Up

The Interlaken Parade pick up point continues to be a tricky one for us at RGLPS. We have been working to meet with the council, but this has coincided with multiple lockdowns until this point. As we wait, I would like to take a moment to discuss how we might be able to make it a safer place for our students. The road itself is very busy with kindergarten and school drop off and pick up at similar times and we don’t have a safety crossing to support students. We have also had a two year period where road safety awareness has been far less prevalent for our students. It does mean that sometimes students may wander onto the road without too much awareness about the vehicles that might be approaching. If you do park on the opposite side of the road, please exit your vehicle, and support your child/ren to cross back to the car. Given the hectic moments of pick up this will support a smoother and safer exit from the school grounds. As always, thank you so much for your continued patience and support throughout these challenging times.

Classes 2022

Thanks to everyone who contacted with information regarding their child/ren for 2022 classes. We are currently attempting to accommodate the requests. As has been mentioned we do guarantee that every child will be placed with at least one child that they have selected as learning friends for 2022. 2020 and 2021 have been really tough for our kids and we do endeavor to give them as many friends as possible, however, with a large cohort population in can be difficult to place all students with all of their friends. We will do our best to make the best possible decisions for all of our students.

Premier's Reading Challenge Champions

At Monday’s assembly, we presented some very special ‘Champion’ pins to our first 10 students to finish the Premiers ‘reading challenge. It has been wonderful to see so many students participating and completing the challenge this year. I know personally, I have enjoyed connecting with my children through reading and have really enjoyed the experience, I trust other families have too. Well done to everyone who got involved.

Inquiry Sustainability Project

CERES INCURSION

By Milla N, Jesinta C, Natalie D May X and Audrey T.

During term 2, students in the Year 5 area were learning about endangered species. Some of our students discovered that we have a local butterfly called the Eltham Copper Butterfly, which is on the endangered list. After researching and learning about this, students decided that they should extend our butterfly garden to better cater for all species of butterfly. Hoping that one day the Eltham Copper butterfly might even make our school home.

In yesterday’s CERES incursion we planted native plants. We used plants like sweet bursaria and yellow dust wattle. This was for our new butterfly garden.

Some students from 5LG, 5JL and 5JV participated in the planting. Some Grade Sixes were kind enough to give up their lunch to help us plant. We learnt to plant a small plant in the marked out area, and we ended up going into lunch time to complete our goal of finishing our garden for the native wildlife. All the kids that participated in this wore gloves and watered the plants after putting in the hole. Kids would use trowels to dig a hole to and then plant grasses, bushes of flowers.

The garden was completed and enjoyed by the kids who did it. One of the CERES staff, Clare, showed us how to plant a small native flower. This helped us to not pull the roots out of the plant. The plants came in a small container that was reusable, soon after we started to plant.

By the end of lunch, we had finished planting and by then it was time to go back to class to have our last session of the day. We all enjoyed the small incursion and planting in our garden, it might take a long time to grow depending on what plant but it was really fun doing it!

This project will continue in the future and Year 5 classes will take turns watering and checking on the plants that are growing.

TEACHING AND LEARNING

ICAS 2021

RGLPS was able to successfully conduct ICAS tests this week for most of our registered students. The ICAS Digitech will be held next Monday 15th November at 12pm.

Year 3/4 students who attended camp will undertake the ICAS Spelling Bee and ICAS English early next week. Makeup ICAS for other registered students absent on a scheduled test day will be held prior to the end of next week.

Please be aware that if students experience technical issues during an ICAS, I provide them with extra time to make up for lost connectivity or a delayed login. No students are disadvantaged with reduced time due to technical issues.
