PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Welcome to our week 6 newsletter. Thank you all for your patience and understanding as we navigate through this new challenge. Let us all hope that next week’s newsletter is extremely positive as we return to COVID normal.
Lockdown Updates
Yesterday the Acting Premier announced new circuit breaker restrictions for Victoria to swiftly address the recent COVID-19 outbreak.
The restrictions will be in place from 11.59pm on the 27th of May for a seven-day period.
Following advice from the Victorian Chief Health Officer, all Victorian schools will move to a period of remote and flexible learning from Monday 31 May to Thursday 3 June inclusive.
Today (Friday 28 May) is a student-free day to allow schools time to prepare. Remote and flexible learning will begin on Monday 31 May.
Our program is a flexible option where students are accessing learning tasks through the Seesaw program. Instrumental music students will also access live learning in tutorial form through Webex. These sessions can be found in your Childs Seesaw account. Wednesday the 2nd of June is a curriculum day and as such a pupil free day.
As with other remote learning periods, our school will provide on-site supervision for students in the following categories:
- – Children where both parents and/or carers are authorised workers who cannot work from home, work for an essential provider and where no other supervision arrangements can be made:
- Where there are two parents/carers, both must be authorised workers, working outside the home in order for their children to be eligible for on-site provision
- For single parents/ carers, the authorised worker must be working outside the home in order for their children to be eligible for on-site provision.
- – Children experiencing vulnerability, including:
- children in out-of-home care
- children deemed vulnerable by a government agency, funded family or family violence service, and is assessed as requiring education and care outside the family home
- children identified by a school or early childhood service as vulnerable, including via referral from a government agency, or funded family or family violence service, homeless or youth justice service or mental health or other health service.

Open Morning 28th May
This morning was not cancelled because we do still want our families to be able to attend school as soon as it is possible. Please look out for a new date as we are all very keen to have our community return to support our students in their learning.
National Reconciliation Week
This week is National Reconciliation Week and the theme is ‘more than a word. Reconciliation takes action’. Our Friday afternoon anti-discrimination group are currently working on taking action through small group projects. I am looking forward to a time when the students will share their work with our community as the passion our students have to educate and act about behaviours that make people feel marginalised is very impressive. The fact that over 40 students were willing to give up their Friday fun time to make a difference is extremely impressive.
Playing Our Part to Build a National Picture of Health
This term, our school, along with thousands of others across the country have been busy making preparations for the fifth Australian Early Development Census (AEDC).
The AEDC gives us a national picture of the development, health and wellbeing of children in their first year of full-time school. Since 2009, the census results have helped communities, schools and governments plan services and develop better policies to target support for children and families.
Children don’t miss any class time, and parents/carers don’t need to supply schools with any new information for the census. The AEDC gives us data at a school and community level – it isn’t an assessment of individual children.
Some teachers have also noticed that completing the assessments made them more aware of the needs of individual children and the class as a whole and that the census results are useful in planning for transitions to Year 1 and developing class programs.
Participation in the AEDC is voluntary. Parents/carers don’t need to take any action unless they choose not to include their children in the census.
On Monday parents of our Prep students received a Compass communication giving them the chance to opt out. If you do not want your child to participate please follow the advice sent through Compass.

Premiers' Reading Challenge
What a fantastic opportunity to get involved with the Premiers’ Reading Challenge over next week. All students should now have their log in details and access to the portal.

Click on the ‘School coordinator or student’ sign-in button.
Next, click on the ‘VPRC login’ button and enter the username and password provided by your classroom teacher.
You can then search for the book you are reading or want to read and add this book. When you finish the book you can enter a review and your thoughts.
Remember: You don’t have to be the one reading the story. Get Mum or Dad (or your clever puppy!) to read to you and enjoy some of the amazing and interesting stories you have around your home.
Should you be having any issues, please don’t hesitate to contact your classroom teacher for support.
Discussing COVID-19 with your Child
All of our students are hearing reports about COVID-19 on the news, radio, internet, etc… Take this time to reassure them and have open discussions about the current situation. Open and honest communication helps them to understand what is happening and why. These conversations are important to help them feel safe and reassured. Should you be needing support, don’t be afraid to reach out. There are many great organisations and resources available to you.

Education Week 2021
Our Education Week Open Morning has needed to be postponed due to the recent COVID outbreak. This has been tentatively rescheduled for Friday June 18thWe hope to be able to invite parents and carers back into classrooms to see our students engaged in a range of stimulating learning activities around the theme ‘Building Connections’.
ICAS 2021
ICAS assessments will be held in August on the dates specified below. Please note that participation in ICAS is completely optional and at parent expense. Each ICAS costs $17.05.
Parents can register their child for one or more of the ICAS through the Parent Payment Portal located at https://www.icasassessments.com/shop-parents/ using the school code MHT858.
ICAS Registrations via the Parent Payment Portal will close on Sunday 25th July 2021.
Year 5/6 High Ability Programs
The Year 5/6 students currently participating in High Ability Programs in English and Maths with Virtual Schools Victoria are now nearing the end of their programs. End of program events for Term 2 are now starting to take shape.
Congratulations to the five students from Year 5/6 who have been selected for the program during Term 3. As I have stated previously, invitations to take part in these programs come from the Department of Education and are based on academic performance.
Semester 1 Reports and Portfolios
All our RGLPS teachers are busy finalising general comments and progression points for Semester One reports. These are due to be released on Wednesday 23rd June 2021.
A reminder to parents/carers to regularly check Seesaw to view portfolio samples that illustrate your child’s progress and achievement. Each classroom teacher uploads an annotated sample of your child’s learning in Reading and Viewing, Writing, Speaking and Listening, Number and Algebra, Applied Maths and Integrated Studies each term. Our teachers spend a considerable amount of time moderating and assessing these samples with colleagues to ensure they can provide useful and accurate information on each child’s learning. Please note that these portfolio samples may not ‘polished’ or end of unit pieces – they should illustrate how each child is performing on that set task on that given day. Portfolio samples on Seesaw are intended to be a realistic ‘snapshot’ of your child’s progress in various parts of the Victorian Curriculum. Our teachers then use these samples, along with formal assessments, observations, bookwork and rich assessment tasks to make their professional judgment for the progression points (dots) on the semester reports.
